Goblins Discord Membership FAQ
What the heck is Goblins?
Goblins is a social platform helping people meet new friends (or go on dates!) in their favorite video games while voice chatting. We have two elements that work best together: The platform is your personal search tool, helping you find specific Goblins you’d click with and want to spend more time with. Our Discord community server is the main room of the party — the buzzing space where everyone hangs out, chats, and joins in on the fun. Together, they give you both a lively community space and an easy way to connect with the right people for you.
You can read more about Lise’s inspiration to build Goblins here!
Is Goblins a dating app?
Not exactly. Goblins is about making authentic connections in your favorite games — friendships, gaming buddies, and yes, sometimes romance (we find the friends-to-more pipeline is STRONG).
When we first launched as Date Like Goblins, “date” was a cheeky nod to its original meaning: a set time and place to meet, regardless of intention. From the start, our goal has been to help people connect in ways that feel fun, low-pressure, and true to who they are — whether that’s teaming up for a raid, finding a co-op buddy, or meeting someone special. The difference between us and a traditional dating app? We want you to stick around after you’ve made those initial connections.
Goblins is a long-term community, not a “match-and-disappear” platform.
Why is the Discord moving to a members-only model?
-
Sustainability: We’ve been self-funded for two years. While we anticipate that Goblins University will do the heavy lifting in generating revenue to support the team and platform development, the Discord membership helps ensure our community grows in the right way.
-
Community Quality: A $3/month paywall is less about funding Goblins and more about keeping our spaces kind, safe, and free of low-quality or bad-fit members — especially as our visibility increases.
-
Protecting the Vibe: Goblins University will be open to anyone on the internet. That means more people will hear about Goblins — which is great for growth, but without a gate, the Discord could be flooded with quantity over quality, diluting what we’ve all worked so hard to build.
-
Balanced Growth: The membership fee is a light filter that helps protect our culture while still offering free access to anyone who truly needs it through /FreeMe Larry.
Where does my membership fee go?
-
Monthly operating costs (hosting, tools, etc.)
-
Paying developers to speed up platform improvements
-
Eventually, a salary for Lise and Clara so that Goblins can continue full-time
Who are OGs?
Early Kickstarter supporters & members who joined before late Oct/early Nov 2024
Occasionally awarded to standout contributors in the community
What if I can’t or don’t want to pay?
That’s okay! We’ve promised never to commercialize loneliness — no one loses access just because they can’t pay. But every Goblin who chips in $3/month helps take the load off Lise personally covering the costs for everyone else (which isn’t sustainable).
Can’t pay? Use our scholarship form or type /FreeMe Larry in the Discord — no proof required, just good-faith honesty.
Don’t want to pay? That’s okay too — we just ask for feedback so we can keep improving.
Do I still get platform access without Discord?
Yes. The platform is currently free. Even without a Discord membership:
All profiles are hand-approved for quality (Patreon tiers of $8+ get expedited review).
You can still send unlimited game requests through the Goblins’ platform
In the future we expect one low monthly membership to cover access to both the platform and the Discord. Our goal is to build something sustainable without ever resorting to selling your data or getting “slimy” with how we fund Goblins — keeping the experience safe, respectful, and community-driven.
Will there be open channels for non-subscribers?
Possibly. We’re exploring a limited “questions” or “profile feedback” space, but we won’t compromise the vibe or overburden our volunteer moderators.
The bottom line:
If you can chip in $3/month, you help keep Goblins alive, sustainable, and kind. If you can’t, you still belong here — just use the scholarship option. Every decision we make is about protecting this community and making sure Goblins lasts for the long run.
